From the 1968 Cathay film Song of Our Family (extant but not available on DVD)
It's not without teary eyes that I announce the end of this blog. The past two and a half years have been full of discovery and gratification. But it's time for me to move on to other domains.
I'd like to give a big thanks to all of my friends and readers. Your comments and messages definitely kept me going during my moments of fatigue.
I have several unfinished posts that I'm determined to complete before I totally exit the Web, so keep an eye out for them sometime in the coming months of 2011.
Best wishes to all of you for a fruitful new year — whatever that might be!
Now let me bid adieu with a lilting island tune by Chang Loo from the 1956 film Who Isn't Romantic, directed by the late Wong Tin Lam and starring Soft Film favorita Chung Ching and veteran actor Kenneth Tsang in one of his first roles.

oh no, say it ain't so...
Well Dave I'm sure I speak for everyone when I say you will be missed.
All the best for 2011
Phil
Your blog doesn't have an expiration date. I don't see why you feel the need to end it so dramatically.
Just leave it alone and update it a month, six months, or a year from now when the mood strikes you.
I assume you are still interested in Chinese film history.
I am sorry to see you close up shop.
Your work here inspired me to work on my blog.
You will be missed.
dave! i'm sorry to see you go! reading your blog for the past year+ was not only a pleasure, but very enlightening. thank you for all your posts, pictures and music from asian stars of yesteryear.
i'm so glad to have made your acquaintance through your blog.
wishing you the very best. hope to see you online wherever you may go.

-- Phil, many thanks. Have a great 2011!
-- Glenn, thanks for the kind words! The dramatic closure is necessary for me so that I can create an empty space to manifest my next passion, whatever that is. In the meantime, I'm going to spend less time on the computer and more time on other things like reading, trying to learn Mandarin, and deep cleaning the messy corners of my life. Take care, pal. :)
-- Ling, nice to have met you too. Best wishes to you and your beau! ;D
Dave, I'll miss your postings but I think I can empathize more than a little with you.
Ga Yau/Jia You in your next adventure!
Zai jian tonghshi. I feel bereft already. Good luck with the Mandarin and messy corners, those can be tricky ;-)
All the best and a thousand thank yous for my favourite blog. A tearful farewell but not goodbye I hope x
Sad Christmas! I guess all good things come to an end, or so I'm told. Thanks for doing this blog in the first place, Dave. I've benefited greatly from your knowledge and you've provided some excellent links that even furthered my ongoing education. Happy New Year and all the best in your future endeavors.
Oh Wow! Blindsided!
Thank you so very much Dave for opening my eyes to the HK films of the past. It's a world I had never explored before and i'm so grateful to you and your blog.
Good luck in your future pursuits and please keep in touch. Thanks again =)
We'll miss you!
I wish you all the best with doing what you want and need to do in life. May you have quality change that brings lasting happiness!
I just recently stumbled upon your fantastic blog, so I am sorry to hear you soon will stop posting.
However, I hope that you will leave the blog online, so I and others at least can have the ability to read all the previous posts.
Thanks for an interesting site and good luck with future passions!
Arr, man!!!
Following a cool blog like this is like getting to know someone and it feels kinda like losing a pal (I know, I know, you probably don't know 90% of us out here but like they say in English dubbed kung fu film: BUT STILL!).
I'll subscribe to Glenn's suggestion; There's no need to make it a full stop. Make an update every 3 months or so. You'll miss it if you don't. And we'll miss the updates + you.
Anyhow, if we can't persuade you to stay here's to a bright and prosperous future for ya, mate.
My sincere and personal thanks to all of you — Dennis, Zoë, Tim, Kingwho?, achillesgirl, Anna, and Jack — for your kind words and support! It really means a lot to me. I'll still be floating around the ether in one form or another, so take this ending as just a prelude to a new beginning. :)
=(
Hi duriandave --
As an addendum to our e-mail correspondence on this matter: after you ended activity on your Connie Chan Po Chu website, you came up with Soft Film. So... hope springs eternal!!!!
But, more seriously, thanks for everything. You deserve a break but if you ever hanker get back on line, you know you've got some loyal readers just waiting to read more of what you write... :)
Hey Dave what a surprise! Your blog is still going on strong. More and more readers are following you. But if you have better things to do, than I wish you the best of luck in whatever you'll be doing next!! I've been reading this blog everyday for a couple of years now. You'll be missed when you're gone!
As someone who has first hand experience with the "addiction model" of blogging, I understand the need to come to a full stop. I look forward to your future endeavors, whatever they may be, and welcome the opportunity to catch up on all of the old posts I missed the first time around.
Your blog has given me hours of entertainment. Thank you so much.
I'm very sad but on the other hand I understand your need to pursue other things.
Best of luck with Mandarin. A wonderful language to learn!!! I hope you have better luck with the tones than I did/do.
Take care.
I have to say, Dave, I'm going to miss seeing your posts in my updates a whole bunch. But don't let that keep you from doing what you got to do!
Good luck, my friend, and thanks for all of the great reading and viewing.
bummer, and i just found this blog a few days ago :(
Thanks once again to all my friends, old and new — Tars, YTSL, SpyMonkey, Todd, sbk, GoldenPigsy, and Aspiring-Otaku. I'm riding high on your warm wishes and good vibes. My sincerest appreciation to each and every one of you. :D
You're not going! Oh no! But truly, best wishes for new ventures.
I'm very sad for the end of your blog, but I was very glad to know you. I wishing you the best for your life.
Nora
A big thanks to both of you! :D

Dear David,
sorry to hear that the curtain will come down on Soft Film. Your blog has been a real inspiration to me.
thank you so much for the great journey.
All the best to you for 2011, David!
I have enjoyed and benefited from this site greatly for the past two years. I am therefore at quite a loss to see you take leave, and do humbly hope you can stay or come back.
Gratefully,
Max
Thanks a lot, guys! :)
OH NO! I had just found your blog recently and was so excited. Please come back in some form or another! Best wishes, Amanda
Thanks for the kind words, Amanda! I'm actually finishing research on an Anna May Wong post right now. It should be ready by Chinese New Year. :)
