Gaga for Bingbing

Excuse me for gushing over my new favorita, Miss Li Bingbing, who has knocked me over with a one-two punch of recent photo shoots. The picture above comes from a candid series taken at the Piazza San Marco in Venice, where she's been attending the International Film Festival in support of her new movie Detective Dee and the Mystery of the Phantom Flame (directed by the once — and hopefully still — visionary Tsui Hark).

At the opposite end of the fashion spectrum are these two stunning photos from a spread in the forthcoming October issue of Harper's Bazaar China. I'm so wowed by them that I'm compelled to break my self-imposed exile in the glamor of yesteryear and celebrate Miss Li's contemporary, yet classic, allure.

Three wonderful shots you found, duriandave!

The second one really caught my attention with the cigarette smoke! Is it just me, or has it been "tweaked" with to spell "BAAZAR"?

What a hoot! The two BingBings emerged almost at the same time. You'd think one of them should consider changing her name. They are sounding more and more like a couple of pinball machines .... BING... BING .... BING .... BING ....

-- øשlqaeda, my sentiments exactly!

-- Fang, you aren't hallucinating. That smoke does indeed spell out "BAAZAR". Prettt cool, huh?

-- SpyMonkey, I used to get the two confused, but Miss Li has gradually emerged as my favorite. I loved her in The Message.

Both of the images from Bazaar that you chose are very well done but the second one is amazing.

Like many people I have a bunch of blogs on various subjects in Google reader--I go through it quickly to in the morning, reading a few items, checking others to come back to at leisure but the one with the red turtleneck, unadorned red cocktail hat with lipstick the same shade made me stop dead in wonder.

The photographer/retoucher/photo editor that Bazaar used on that story really know their stuff.

Ed & Ling, that last photo of Li Bingbing in red is truly outstanding. It's so perfect, it almost looks like a painting.

She's also a better actress than Fan BB, imho. Awesome in The Message, as you noted. Looking forward to seeing her in Detective Dee doing her Brigitte Lin Ching-Hsia imitation.

Those digitally created "smoke signals" are cool, duriandave!

Any idea if she actually smokes, as a matter of curiousity?

-- V., I totally agree with you! Yep, can't wait to see her in Detective Dee.

-- Fang, I don't know if she's a smoker in real life, but Li Bingbing certainly smoked a lot in The Message.

Does anyone thinks Li BB can play Anita Mui in a biopic? She resembles Anita but I don't know if she can speak Cantonese though.

duriandave said...

Hmmm... she does look a bit like Anita, although she doesn't have her bee-stung lips. Are there plans for a biopic?

Speaking of lookalikes, I thought that Cecilia Cheung looked quite believable as Zhou Xuan in that TV series she did a few years ago.

Your newest posting (Maylia: "Beautiful" in Cantonese) is not viewable. I noticed the new listing of it on the dashboard and have seen more than one link to it, but when I click on the links, it says the post doesn't exist.

Hopefully, this will be fixed. I look forward to reading it!

Yeah, I accidentally hit "Publish" last night when I meant to hit "Preview". I'm still working on the post. Hopefully, I can finish it tonight.

Love these pics Dave. The turban is a look not many can carry off! I recall Lana Turner being one who could and in later years Joan Collins as Alexis in TV soap Dynasty. Bing Bing's eyebrows in the second pic are extremely enviable!
SpyMonkey is there an Anita Mui biopic in the making? That's a film I would like to see. Directed by Stanley Kwan.

Zoë, evidently there was a made-for-TV biopic a few years ago ( more pics here).

As for Bingbing's eyebrows, I'm sure you could achieve the same results with the right combination of lighting, makeup, and Photoshop. ;p

Dave,

Since you are a fan of her, here is her most recent picture with Andy Liu.

An Anita Mui biopic would be a dream project many movie fans would love to see. However, I believe quite a few chapters in Anita's life involved encounters with the gangsters (who are still alive and controlling the show business in HK). I doubt if anyone in HK has the courage to do it.
