Exploring the ephemeral past of Chinese entertainment from Hong Kong, the U.S.A., and around the world: vaudeville pioneers, flappers, aviatrices, burlesque dancers, hula hoopers, movie queens, sex bombs, jade girls, tomboys, pin-ups, sour beauties, girl jocks, swordswomen, and go-go girls.

Chen Man: Better than Andy on Adam
A big thanks to dleedlee for turning me on to photographer Chen Man. I'd already seen, and dug, a lot of her fashion photography — especially her recent shoot for Esquire featuring actress Fan Bingbing as Che Guevara, Bruce Lee, Superman, and Elvis Presley — but never knew who it was behind the camera. After googling some of her other work, I'm really blown away by her trippy avant-pop sensibility.
Chen Man just had a show in Hong Kong, which I'm bummed about missing. But the good news is that a book of her photographs, Chen Man: Works 2003-2010, was recently published. I ordered a copy yesterday, and it's already on its way — hurray! I'll report back as soon as it arrives.
* The photos above were taken from Chen Man's blog. She also has a website.

Great stuff, Dave. Yeah, the first post I made was related to her upcoming book. There were supposed to be some Hong Kong star featured in some sort of Top Ten and I kept waiting to stumble across it but never did. Thanks for rooting all this out!
Wonderful! And thanks for all the links. I spent a fun hour looking at her work...amazing.
Beautiful photos, I like the purple hair.
-- Dennis, two stumblers are better than one when it comes to tripping around the Web. ;)
-- sbk, you're welcome. I also spent about an hour looking at her photos.
-- Nora, me too. Makes me think of Jimi Hendrix!
WOW! I had admired the work of Chen Man without knowing who had shot the pictures--in addition to photoshopping, retouching, hand coloring and actually doing all the manipulation of her images.
As well as being so talented she is a very attractive young woman herself who could work on either side of the camera.
While I still find terms like "one of the top fashion photographers in the People's Republic of China" that is what she is and since she is only 30 it will be nice to watch her work develop.
love the first picture. haven't heard of chen man's works but she definitely knows the art of "larger than life"
