Josephine Siao: The Golden Cat

Here's the soundtrack EP for Josephine Siao's 1967 film The Golden Cat (飛賊金絲貓), another one of her sadly unavailable "Jane Bond" movies. The embedded mp3 players I was using before suddenly stopped working, so just click on the link and the song should play automatically in your browser.

Enjoy!

花嬌不似玉人媚 ("Love Potion No. 9") (play song)

結伴遊春 ("Summer Holiday") (play song)

狂歡舞曲 ("La La La Song") (play song)

* Here's the back cover of the EP with Chinese lyrics

Hi duriandave --

What a coincidence -- seems like I was getting ready to watch a Josephine Siao movie ("Hiroshima 28") at the Hong Kong Film Archive as you were working on this post! :)

Loved the La, La, La Song! Perfect complement to my morning cup of coffee. :D

Love Potion No. 9 seems to have been very popular. I recall it popping up in a number of old the films.

-- YTSL, please give me a quick yay or nay review of Hiroshima 28 here in the comments. ;)

-- Dennis, that's the one I la-la-la-loved the most too!

-- Professor, glad you're liking these! I've got one more Josephine Siao EP on the way, then I'll start putting up a few of my Connie Chan records.

Very groovy. Thanks. Am actually a fan of Cliff Richard's version of Summer Holiday in the film of the same title. Looking forward to more of these treats.

Hey Brian! I've never seen Summer Holiday. I'll have to check it out. Just found a clip on YouTube of Cliff singing the song. Looks fun! :)

Summer Holiday is a fun innocent innocuous early 60's teen flick. He along with the Shadows were huge in England until the Beatles came along and according to Wiki he still holds the record for most singles ever sold in the UK. He made two other films I have seen and enjoyed - The Young Ones and Expresso Bongo. There is a longer version of the song but can't recall if it shows up in the film.

Btw - was wondering re: Cantonese films with songs - do you know if it was the general custom for the actors to sing the songs as opposed to having someone else do it as in the Mandarin films?

Thanks Dave for such gems.
La La song was from Cliff's last
movie Finders Keepers (shot entirely in Spain in 1966)

Love Potion No.9 was a big hit
by Mersey sound group The Searchers

Chan Kwan Lang, who covered many
of the male singing in the HK movies, did the singing in this song.

Hi duriandave --

Yay re "Hiroshima 28". (I rate it a 7.5 on the brns.com scale.) :)

-- Oldflames, yeah the addition of Tom Cat swinging a mace makes the cover extra cool!

-- Brian, the big Cantonese teen idols of the late 60s (Josephine, Connie Chan, Nancy Sit, Bobo Fung) all sang their own songs, but as webb burt said, most of the leading men had a ghost singer. BTW, there's a pretty great Pathe 100 CD featuring these girls.

-- webb burt, thanks for that info! It appears that Cliff Richard was very popular in Hong Kong.

-- YTSL, thanks! Looks like it's available for viewing at the HKFA resource center. Maybe I'll try to watch some of these Lung Kong movies on my next visit.
